Listen closely as the expressive instruments build up in intensity on the song, "Gentle Rain." You will feel the ambiance of the rain falling and gradually increasing with strength. Another song, "Vanish," is emotive as the sax passionately plays with a graceful style while the bass, piano, and drums intermingle with rich and mellow progressions. If you like pop/rock with bigger-than-life hooks and sing-along choruses that stick with you long after the last note has drifted off into the night then, Red Directors, delivers the goods on their latest CD, "Wave It In," a ten song collection of highly polished power pop gems. "After Sunday" kicks things off with its infectious, era-spanning sense of melody and drive. It's only one of several highlights though. The accomplished folk singer, Anne Price, returns with her 4th CD, "A Few More Miles to Go," yet another wonderful collection of (mainly) traditional – if lesser exposed, potent folk songs. Opening with a cover of the late, under-appreciated contemporary folk stylist, Kate Wolf (an influence on Nanci Griffith), "The Trumpet Vine" serves as a terrific introduction for a varied set that reveals folk music's rich and evolving traditions. As a veteran and leading exponent of NYC's storied folk heritage, Price's mastery of the music's many styles is unquestioned. As such, her take on the mountain ballad-like "Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key," a Woodie Guthrie tune originating from the seminal 1998 album by Billy Bragg & Wilco ("Mermaid Avenue") is true and affecting, as is her a cappella rendition of the English ballad, "The Keys of Canterbury." Elsewhere, Price's mid-range voice (not unlike Griffith's instrument these days) is the perfect vehicle for songs of homespun humor such as "Chocolate," children's sing-alongs songs like "Yucky Bugs," or praises to nature's wonder with "Black Waters." But nowhere is the singer better represented than on her Iris DeMent-like rendition of the playful Janis Ian tune, "My Autobiography." Without a doubt, Anne Price's excellent CD, "A Few More Miles to Go," is a fine addition to the American folk music library; the pairing of a revered songbook with a treasured performer.

Imagine if the members of The Cure decided to replace lead singer Robert Smith with a sexy female vocalist. If you can't, then perhaps listening to "Whitelite Britelite" by Auradrone will help you see the big picture. Hailing from Los Angeles, the band is fronted by the very talented Jon Mack. Her vocals are filled with tasty lyrics and sex appeal to the max. Just give a good listen to songs like "Auto Erotic" and "A Channel," and listeners will be able to hear her vocals at their best. The band is also very good and is great at changing the style of songs while still keeping that "Auradrone" sound throughout it all. "Indigo Child" is both classic 80's and super erotic at the same time, so be sure to give that track a few spins. If you love The Cure or the sound they represent, give Auradrone's "Whitelite Britelite" a good listen.

Howce Clemens brilliantly fuses the sounds of pop, rock, and R&B on his new EP, titled "Each Lifetime Is A Voyage." Clemens' voice throughout the entire album has a musky Johnny Cash vibe to it. That country vocal tone shines through on numbers like "Please Take Care" and "Little Darlin'." Taking a nod from another rocker band fused with country, the Eagles, Clemens delivers a wonderful piece of music with the title track, "Each Lifetime Is a Voyage." The vocal harmonies in the chorus and complementing instrumentation give this track a happy, lighthearted feel. Howce Clemens' "Each Lifetime Is a Voyage" is a great album for any Johnny Cash or Eagles fan looking for a new and fantastic set of tunes.

The Ramblin Dawgs energetic three song EP "Rockin Blues," is full of classic 70's/80's blues tone we all love and remember. The first single, "Steppin Up" is a wonderful throw back to the sound of the Fabulous Thunderbirds with some dirty guitar work by Carlos "C-Dawg" DC. "You Let Me Down" also showcases "C-Dawg's" Clapton infused playing and lets us hear the band jam out some soulful, slow tempo blues. Closing out the three single EP is "Worse Without You," a Chicago style blues number with solid chord progressions and guitar driven riffs and solo. The band as a whole is extremely talented, but Carlos' guitar skills stand out amongst anything else on this disc and deserve to be noticed. If you like Clapton or that old school Chicago blues sound, then "Rockin Blues" is a great CD to add to your collection.

"Sunrise Forever" is an impressive country pop album from a talented singer/songwriter in Maurice Mertoli. With this album, Mertoli has crafted ten gems with great arrangements that utilize the piano and harmonica to perfection, and feature nice guitar solos and some great vocal layering. Mertoli authored all of the songs, pouring his heart out into these upbeat and melodic songs about love, life, joy and sorrow. Mertoli delivers with a pop country vocal performance reminiscent of Garth Brooks and Alan Jackson, though "I Found My Way to You" and "Life Is What You Make It" feature a great female vocal performance. "Sunrise Forever" is well-recorded and sounds professional and superb. "Running Free" has one of the better arrangements on the album with a great piano line leading the way, a great bass line, and nice guitar solos. "Felicia" is the five-song electro pop debut EP from fifteen year old phenom Felicia Punzo. Prepare to hear about Felicia for years upon years to come, as her smooth and clean vocal performance puts her in the same vein as Miley Cyrus and early Madonna. Suffice to say, she has mainstream written all over her. This EP is filled with great electro and hip-hop beats that, even if dared, you couldn't sit still to. Felicia writes her own lyrics, which is more than you can say about most young pop sensations. She sings about love and lost love, including one particularly heartfelt song, "Angel," which is about a young friend of hers that passed on. The recording quality is excellent and ready for club play, or to be cranked up at a house dance party. "Do It Anyway You Wanna" has a nice electro beat and a great use of synthesizers, showing Felicia's minimalist side. "Love of a Lifetime" is a more lyrical track ready for radio play that is sure to make you marvel at Felicia's maturity level considering her age. Overall, "Felicia" is an impressive debut from a young new artist sure to consistently make her way to the radio waves. For fans of electro pop and the likes of Miley Cyrus, Felicia Punzo would make a worthy addition.

"500 Miles" by When Thunder Comes (Rock Artist from Washington DC)

A big part of the appeal of the New Wave movement back in the early 80's was the shift away from the bloated AOR sounds dominating airwaves to a simpler, '60's-oriented approach to songs and melody, albeit filtered through a new attitude - as well as a new sonic template, that would eventually shape much of the legacy of '80's rock. On "500 Miles," the latest CD from When Thunder Comes, New Wave is the order of the day in a 12-song collection that is, however, no less contemporary for all of its retro embellishments. On songs like "Good Ole Days" and the title track, "500 Miles," keenly balanced lead and harmony vocals are set off against tasteful synth incursions to flesh out rockers that are both catchy and provocative. Other tracks evoke different sounds of the New Wave era, like "See You In My Dreams," with its almost U2-like slice of ethereal pop, and "Endless Seas," reminiscent of classic Talking Heads. Throughout, though, the band plays with fire and precision, delivering up a set of infectious originals that mark When Thunder Comes' "500 Miles" CD as fitting in this era as it would have been 25 years ago.

"These People Aren't You" by Kid Goat (Rock Artist from Washington DC)

Tom Petty once proudly sang about the southern accent where he came from. Well, despite Kid Goat's eastern (DC & PA) origins, that accent imbues everything about Kid Goat's excellent "These People Aren't You" CD, an exploration of roots and alternative country-leaning rock that adds up to Americana at its finest. With Matt Aquiline and Belen Pifel trading off lead singing duties, Kid Goat strikes a nifty balance over 13 guitar-driven songs that alternately rock, swing, and sway. A jangle guitar underpins the hook-filled opener, "Must Be Blind," as the duo harmonize in the best southern tradition, while on "From You," Pifel's delicate country-tinged voice, which is reminiscent of Tift Merritt's, is the perfect vehicle for an memorable, pretty tune. Elsewhere, Aquiline's voice calls to mind the breakthrough BoDeans debut LP, with songs like "Pennsylvania" and "Working World" capturing the rawness at the heart of great rock 'n' roll. All told, "These People Aren't You" is a solid debut CD for Kid Goat; one that knocks down borders in the service of terrific Americana rock.

"Heaven In A Nightclub" by William Edgar captures the sound and spirit of a live concert combining elements of jazz, spirituals, blues and gospel. This concert was obviously meant to be a spiritual experience as well as a musical one. These skillful musicians take you on a journey through history, from deep sorrow to indistinguishable joy. They begin the set with a spirited interpretation of the jazz standard "Autumn Leaves" and the fiery "Renewal," with the melodic sax of Joe Salvano and the soulful vocals of Ruth Naomi Floyd flowing on top of the rhythmic piano of William Edgar, all anchored by bass virtuoso John Patitucci. Edgar also offers commentary throughout, including his thoughts on the Underground Railroad and jazz composer Duke Ellington. "Motherless Child" begins with an emotional bass intro by Patitucci, continuing with Floyd's smooth, silky vocals while Edgar provides a subtle piano backdrop. "Jesus is on the Mainline" is an expressive and passionate solo piece from Patitucci, and his enormous talent is evident from the first note. "Train Underground" features sizzling vocals from Floyd, once again driven by the strong, unwavering bass of Patitucci. "Lay My Burden Down" is an energetic gospel tune, getting the crowd involved and showcasing the immense vocal abilities of Floyd. This release will be enjoyed by fans of jazz, blues, and gospel music in the vein of both Duke Ellington and Mahalia Jackson.

"The Way of the Heart" is well-recorded; TAMIR's spoken word delivery is clean and Vahab's instrumentals sound precise and balanced. "Gamble" is a great story about paradox and risk in the game of love, with the inspiring lyric, "Gamble everything for love, if you're a true human being." "Separation" has frantic poetry delivered by TAMIR matched by frantic acoustic instrumental work from Vahab. "Sacrifice" is a poem about a conversation between a chickpea and a chef that comments on the predestination and liveliness of the chickpea. "The Way of the Heart" is an excellent release 800 years in the making, and anyone who marvels at the insightfulness and mysticism of Rumi are going to want to pick "'The Way of the Heart' poetry of Rumi" up.

"It All Belongs to Him" is the outstanding, eclectic contemporary Christian solo debut from singer/songwriter Elizabeth Salvatico. Salvatico blends her own cultural diversity with the influence she gained from a mission trip to Kenya to craft songs with African and Latin, as well as gospel, blues, jazz, symphonic orchestra, and piano rock qualities. This album also has songs sung in English, Spanish, and in chant form from the Masai of Kenya, though, regardless of language, all of the songs are about glorifying God. Salvatico has an excellent vocal range and takes lead on these songs well, and these recordings also feature some great vocal accompaniment from the Wilmington Chester Mass Choir. "It All Belongs to Him" is well-produced, the vocals and arrangements clean and professional sounding. "The Masai Song" opens up the album with an all-encompassing track that begins with a pleasant chant from the Masai, then introduces rhythmic conga beats that are soon after accompanied by violin and piano, and the three instruments just jam for a while. Salvatico lends her native tongue to the title track, "It All Belongs to Him," and "Your Love (Tu Amor)," which features excellent Latin guitar and piano work as Salvatico praises God for his love, alternating between English and Spanish. All of the other tracks are strictly in English, and have a great piano rock feel to them. "It All Belongs to Him" is a musically and vocally impressive debut from Elizabeth Salvatico, and any fan of eclectic contemporary Christian music should check it out.

"A Band In Your Dreams" is the debut album from Pennsylvania indie rock outfit Marsiglia. Marsiglia blends bluesy riffs, blistering guitar solos, toe-tapping drum beats, and unique poppy vocals to create a great college rock sound that fuses together a number of influences. The arrangements are tight, drawing from both classic and modern rock sounds. Similarly, the vocal performance has nice variety to it, and Marsiglia as a whole can sound like Incubus, Rage Against the Machine, and Kings of Leon, as well as an array of classic rock artists. The songs are fast-paced and in-your-face, very creative, with great hooks and catchy lyrics. "A Band In Your Dreams" is well-produced and the instrumentation and vocals sound clean and balanced. "Past the Point" begins with ambience, then slowly builds into a great arrangement with excellent lead and rhythm guitar work, a nice beat, and is lyrical and catchy. "Love of the Game" and the closer, "Heavy Water," stand out as slower paced tracks with more diverse arrangements, inserting the piano and cello, respectively, into the songs to accompany the great, memorable lyrics. With "A Band In Your Dreams," Marsiglia have arrived, though with an album title as immodest as this one, the band itself may not be surprised to hear how good it actually is. Fans of classic and blues rock influenced college rock should definitely look into Marsiglia.

Their sound is a highly original blend of classic and modern rock that is polished and radio-ready. The entire album is characterized by strong lead vocals and energetic guitar riffs, coupled with powerful drumming and solid bass lines. The production is raw and simplistic, giving the music a distinct sharpness and edge. The songs are well-written and performed with an enthusiasm and spirit that shines through on each track. "Anna Was the Enemy" is a strong opener, displaying their hard-rocking sound and captivating hooks. "Wide Eyed Wonder" and "Finally Out of My Mind" are also exemplify Fools & Horses' moving lead vocals, spirited guitar work and gifted songwriting. "Feature Presentation" is an excellent and original New York hip-hop album from brothers Kweku "Gift" and Nana "King Black" Saunderson, who perform under the modest alias It's Only Us. The Saunderson brothers both have strong musical backgrounds, and they lend this knowledge to the musical variety on this album, skillfully fusing a hip-hop foundation with r&b, jazz, techno, reggae, and pop. Both members of It's Only Us deliver great, original, and well-timed hip-hop flows with intelligent and humorous socially-conscious lyrics. The songs feature hot head-bobbing beats, catchy hooks, and great musical diversity throughout. "Feature Presentation" was produced by Amen-Ra Records, and it sounds professional and ready to hit the shelves of record stores everywhere. "Shorty (feat. Saundra Jordan)" has a catchy hook, a great beat, a jazzy trumpet line in the background throughout, and nice lyrical delivery. "Livin' in a Circus" shows It's Only Us' sense of humor with circus music in the background, witty metaphorical lyrics, and a great fun delivery. "Feature Presentation" may very well be the breakthrough album that brings It's Only Us into the mainstream, as their excellent hip-hop flows and original, musically diverse arrangements certainly put them in the category of "Dope". Fans of great New York hip-hop, don't let the name confuse you – It's Only Us is entirely worthy of your time.

"On The Wings Of A Dragonfly" is an upbeat ambient new age concept album from The Lily Pond Orchestra. Douglas JP Lee is the orchestrator of The Lily Pond Orchestra, composing and creating all of the instrumental sounds you hear on the album. Lee has a way with formulating a broad concept for an entire album and sticking with it throughout. "On The Wings Of A Dragonfly" is no different as Lee embraces the outdoors and nature with an ode to the emergence of springtime in New England. The result is an upbeat, peaceful, and meditative sound that fully embraces and captures the essence of nature. The album is well-produced and sounds excellent. "Mossy Green and Turquoise" has some great keyboard work that creates a soundtrack to the sprouting of life and if you close your eyes you'll visualize these colors. "Mourning Cloak" is about the subject of inspiration for the entire album, the flapping of a butterfly's wings as it floats slowly away. "On The Wings Of A Dragonfly" is aptly titled, as it makes the listener feel as though they are floating through the springtime. Fans of ambient new age, be sure to pick this one up.

"RSG-1" is the eclectic and truly original do-it-yourself debut from Random Song Generator. Random Song Generator is Neil Santos, a multi-instrumentalist that has his head around a variety of musical styles and proves it by playing all of the instruments on the album himself. The arrangements are solid and bass heavy, ranging in genre from hip-hop to pop to funk to techno to metal to folk to stoner rock. By sampling all of these genres, Santos goes against the grain and embraces every genre he finds aurally pleasing instead of limiting himself musically. The result is a mixtape of musical diversity, a Random Song Generator, which is entirely enjoyable and musically impressive. His vocals change with the genre, such as quicker deliveries similar to Beck during the "Mellow Gold" and "Odelay" days, rock ballads similar to Ryan Adams, and the distorted rock somewhere between Blur and Foo Fighters. "RSG-1" is well-produced; raw when it sounds better raw, clean when it sounds better clean, and bringing fully to life this incredibly imaginative album. "Just In Love" has a heavy rock sound with a catchy guitar line and backing bass, hip-hop deliveries on the verses and rock vocals on the chorus. "Addicted to Funk" is an impressive funk track with its splashy bass line, good use of synthesizers, and a group vocal on the chorus: "We're addicted to funk/ And we're looking to party, yeah!" With "RSG-1," Neil Santos has really put something interesting together by audibly displaying his knowledge of a variety of genres and laying down the foundation for many "RSG" releases to come. Eclectic music fans in need of a new mixtape should definitely look into Random Song Generator.

"Working My Way Up To You" is a contemporary Christian rock album filled with great songs of devotion from a fantastic musician in Mike Koehl. Mike's vocals highlight the album with his great voice as the foundation and the harmony and layering bringing his talents to new heights. The overall sound of the album is very hip and modern. You'll hear some great innovations, both in the arrangements and in the production. Great care was taken in recording and mixing "Working My Way Up To You" to ensure the optimal spiritual experience while listening to this album, and it sounds top notch. "Jesus Reigns" kicks things off with a great variance in the arrangement and fantastic vocal layering. "Don't Mind the Rain" begins, oddly enough, with a rain track and evolves into a wonderful song with booming backing vocals and a certain southern rock quality. "Soul to Keep" wraps things up nicely with a beautiful piano progression, a little Mellotron, and another memorable vocal performance. With "Working My Way Up To You," Mike Koehl has delivered an album that should establish him as one of the greats in the non-secular music world. RadioIndy is pleased to present Ken Macy with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Three"

"Three" is a soulful blues-rock EP from talented multi-instrumentalist Ken Macy. Macy lays down the vocals and all of the guitar work on this EP and with the assistance of Kevin Haverty on drums, he has crafted some great blues-rock tracks. His pitch is that of a tenor, making for a unique and memorable vocal performance, though the soulfulness of his voice and the content of his songs are similar to Eric Clapton's style of blues. "Three" is filled with tender harmonies and songs about love and heartbreak, dreams and drinking. This EP was also self-produced by Macy, giving him the final say-so on the overall sound. The result is something to take pride in, both as a musician and as a producer. "Out Of My Life" is a song of heartbreak, of good times and bad times and putting a situation out of his hands. Look for a great rhythmic blues sound in this one in particular. "Queen-Bee" features Dave Kurdzionak on the saxophone, great metaphoric lyrics, and is a great collaboration of intermittent sax solos and the underlying blues arrangement. Overall, "Three" is a great EP with a unique, soulful vocal and an intense blues-rock feel that would make for an non-regrettable addition to any collection.
